BEARY GOOD WEEK!

Dear Parents,

We had a "beary" good week.  We enjoyed bringing our bears, dogs, cats, rabbits,  and birds to class and taking them to the "Animal Hospital." Some of them had ear aches, broken legs, and others had their annual physicals.  We used our language skills to get a complete medical history on our animals.  We put a splint on a bear with a broken leg and administered shots to sick dogs.  One animal had an accident and got completely covered with bandages. The children also had fun making doctor/nurse bags.

We ended our week with a cool science experiment.  We made a bottle wave by adding water, mineral oil, blue food coloring and a fish. We also made a bottle tornado (vortex).  We learned from this project that in order for water to flow down, air must flow up.
Please ask your child about this.

PET WEEK!

Dear Parents,

We introduced our pet unit with a visit from Geddy, a yellow naped amazon parrot.  I think Geddy had had almost as much fun talking and singing for the children as they did watching him.  Did you know, according to bird experts, some parrots have the reasoning skills of a three year old child?  I am not sure if this is true, but it only took Geddy two weeks to learn how to put a ball into a basketball net.   Geddy is twenty-four years old and is expected to live another sixty five years.

After seeing what a parrot looks like, the children made their own version of a bird.  They decorated it with markers, feathers and added eyes to it.  The birds look adorable hanging on a line in our classroom.

We made our own pet houses by painting coffee boxes and decorating them with animal stickers.  Finally, we added shingles to the roof and placed a carpet inside.  The children had so much fun playing with them.

On Friday we had a special visitor,  Michelle, a science teacher at Puddlestompers (a nature exploration program).  She taught the children all about worms.  She then had them dig up worms. Did you know that the earthworm's body is made up of two layers of muscle with a layer of water in between; and that earthworms do not have eyes but have light sensitive cells all over their bodies? Ask your child about this.

We ended our week by making adorable aquariums.

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday.  Please sign up for one,  if you haven't done so already.

RECYCLE!

Dear Parents,

We finally completed our nutrition unit. We took a little break to work on our Mother's Day presents. Some of the books we read about the Five Food Groups were: The Dairy Group, The Protein Group, The Grain Group, Drinking Water, The Vegetable Group, and The Fruit Group, all written by Helen Frost We then made our own Food Group Booklets and "Healthy Plate" place mats.

This week we learned all about recycling. The children also learned a new recycle song. "R-E-C-Y-C-L-E", its really up to you and me to RECYCLE! We then read, Where does all the garbage go, by Melvin Berger. We recycled single serve cereal boxes, push up ice cream cups &sticks, and scraps of colored paper. The children made the most fabulous recycled trains with them. They also cut strips of paper and glued them together to make train tracks. They had so much fun racing their trains around the track. We now have a recycle bin in our classroom.

We celebrated Tihan's fourth birthday this week. Happy Birthday Tihan! Thank you to Tihan's family for the delicious cupcakes and the books.

On Friday, we made our own pizza to celebrate the completion of the alphabet letters, which even included writing the entire alphabet. There has been consistent growth in the children's fine motor and writing skills. We are so proud of their accomplishments!
