All About Fall!

Dear Parents,

We continued our Fall unit by reading Fall, by Cynthia Amoroso and Pumpkin, by Barrie Watts. We made pumpkin puppets by cutting out pumpkins, adding eyes, hair, and accordion arms and legs.

Dr. Van, a pediatric dentist, came to visit our school this week.  He spoke to the children about proper dental care and good nutrition.  He was really impressed with how much the children new about dental health.  He talked about how many teeth children have.  He also showed the children how to brush and floss their teeth.

We introduced the letter "I" this week.  We practiced writing the letter I and came up with a list of words that begin with letter I.  So far, we have learned the letters I, L, E, F, H, T, and their sounds.  The children are beginning to sound out words that begin with these letters. They have also been practicing writing in their "Handbook With Out Tears" workbooks.

The children worked on their math skills this week by playing counting games (Pop and Add Games) and they also practiced writing their numbers.

We finished off our week by making delicious pumpkin bread.  Mmm, was it delicious!!  We placed a copy of the recipe in your child' cubby.

FALL IS HERE!

Dear Parents,

We had a great week learning about fall.  We introduced our fall unit by reading What Makes the Seasons, How do you Know it's Fall?, and Watch it Grow.  We learned that fall always comes after summer and before winter.  Cooler weather is a sign that fall has arrived.  Leaves are changing colors and pumpkins are ready to be picked.

We created a fall bulletin board by sponge painting colorful leaves.  We also cut out acorns, painted them, and added coffee for texture.  Finally, we added a furry squirrel to our bulletin board.

The children had so much fun decorating pumpkins using googly eyes, foam shapes, and crinkly hair.  We also took a nature walk and collected lots of colorful leaves.  We then sorted the leaves by colors and then glued them onto a poster. What a beautful display of fall leaves!

We concluded our week by doing a "Magic Colored Milk Science Project."  First we poured milk onto a plate and then added food coloring.  We then dipped a cotton swab into dishwashing detergent and then touched the coated swab to the milk in the center of the plate.  The children were amazed at the results.  They became so excited as the colors swirled around the plate. Ask your child about it.

Notes:
~We hope to see you on Sunday at the Harvest Festival in      Newton Center from 10 - 4.
~Parent Conferences will be held on Wednesday, November 4th.
Sign-up Sheet will be posted in our classroom.

ALL ABOUT PICASSO!

Dear Parents,
This week we learned about Pablo Picasso who was born more than 120 years ago in Malaga, Spain.  He is known for being the co-founder of Cubism which is a style where parts of the painting are broken up and re-painted in an abstract form.  You can see your children’s “Inspired by Picasso,” portraits on the back wall of our classroom.

The children created Picasso’s “Hand with Flowers” by painting circles of different colors, and adding leaves and stems to the flowers.  They also added their handprints to the flower stems (to make it look like they were holding it in their hands).  The results were amazing!    The children were so proud of their accomplishments!  They kept walking by the bulletin board and admiring their art work.

We also celebrated Maddox's fourth birthday.  Thank you to Maddox's family for the delicious treats.
Happy 4th Birtday Maddox

Picasso work was divided into periods.  In The Blue Period, were sad looking paintings using blue and blue-green colors.  The Rose Period, which was a happy style with
orange and pink colors.

Do I look cool, or what?

We ended our week by doing a science experiment on capillary action, or in other words walking water.

~First we placed 6 plastic glasses on the table.
~Next we added water and food coloring to every other glass.A
~ We then folded 3 paper towel in half 3 times.
~Finally, we placed the end of each towel into the glass.
~ We waited ten minutes and then checked it.
Ask your child what
happened next.
